Back home,
if someone suggested buying tickets to a Rugby or AFL match, then just staying
in the car park of the stadium and not actually going into the game, I’d think
them a fool. But here….its what many do. In fact, at ‘tailgating parties’ people buy
game day tickets + a parking ticket, set up their truck with BBQs, big screen
tv’s, fridges etc, and then party on there in the car park. I love the way Wikipedia defines it - “a tailgate party is a social
event held on and around the open tailgate
of a vehicle. Tailgating often involves consuming alcoholic beverages and
grilling food”. As amusing as that is, it is
an accurate description and I would say “often” is polite as there is copious
amounts of grilling and consumption occurring!
I was amazed at the setups that many had. Everything from simply backyard BBQ style
arrangements to massive RV trucks with live music and full bars. And not just one or two groups, but thousands
throughout the car park.
A tailgate experience is certainly unique and as with all things in
Texas, it big and wild.
